Bruce's story
Bruce came into our care as a stray in 2022. Although little is known about his past, the scars on his body tell a story of hardship and suffering. As he began to settle in, it became clear that Bruce was carrying deep fears. He showed signs of severe resource guarding, making it challenging, and at times dangerous, to take anything from him. He is also frightened by passing cars and wary of new people, especially men. On top of this, Bruce has epilepsy and requires daily medication to manage his condition.
After much thought and professional assessment, we made the decision that rehoming Bruce would not be safe, for him or for potential adopters. Because of this, Bruce has found a forever home with us as a permanent resident. His safety and well-being are our top priorities, and keeping him in our care is the best way to ensure he continues to feel secure and loved.
Benji's story
Benji arrived at our shelter as a stray in 2022. His fear became apparent early on, when a volunteer gently kicked a football and Benji reacted by biting in panic. We soon realised that any kicking motion sends him into a state of fear, suggesting he may have experienced abuse in the past. Benji is deeply anxious around unfamiliar people, cars, and bicycles, and he often becomes reactive when out on walks. Thankfully, the peaceful, rural setting of our kennels provides a calm environment where he can enjoy quiet walks without overwhelming stimuli.
After carefully observing his behaviour, we’ve concluded that rehoming Benji would not be safe. His fear-based responses can escalate quickly in unfamiliar situations, making it too risky for both him and potential adopters. Benji will remain in our care, where he can feel secure and continue to enjoy life at his own pace.
Charlie's story
Charlie joined us in 2024 and was quickly rehomed, but sadly, the placement didn’t work out and he was returned to our care. Since then, it’s become clear that Charlie struggles with certain situations, especially when people leave his kennel or when he meets someone new. He’s currently receiving tailored training to help him feel more secure and confident.
While Charlie isn’t ready for rehoming just yet, we don’t believe he’s unsuitable for a home. He simply needs more time, support, and patience to fully adjust. For now, he’ll remain a long-term resident with us, where we can give him the care and consistency he needs.
FAQs
Will I be sponsoring one specific dog?
The Bright Future Fund is a shared support programme. Your monthly donation goes directly towards helping all of the dogs in our care, including permanent residents like Bruce and Benji who need lifelong support. This allows us to respond flexibly to each dog’s needs, whether that’s vet care, training, or daily essentials.
Why can't I visit the dogs I’m supporting?
The dogs in our care are extremely nervous or reactive around strangers due to past trauma. For their safety and wellbeing, we minimise their exposure to unfamiliar people and surroundings. While visits aren’t possible, we’ll keep you updated through our newsletter and Facebook group, so you can still follow their journey.
I’m having trouble signing up. What should I do?
If you’re having any issues signing up or haven’t received your confirmation email, please get in touch with Sarah at [email protected] and she’ll ensure everything is set up smoothly for you.
What happens if one of the dogs I’ve read about gets rehomed?
We’ll always keep you informed. If a dog you’ve grown fond of in our updates gets rehomed, we’ll let you know in the newsletter and introduce you to another resident who will benefit from your support.
Can I cancel my Bright Future Fund membership?
